Sunday Morning Well (Tortola)

The site where in 1834 the "Proclamation of Emancipation" giving freedom from slavery was read.It is marked by a bronze plaque on the well which reads:-"On August 1st, 1834, the Proclamation of Emancipation was read in the territory of the Virgin Islands proclaiming 5,133 Negro slaves free. This historic site, popularly known as the Sunday Morning Well is one of the sites where the order was read, abolishing the English plantation slavery system."

Head from the main roundabout in Road Town towards the Supreme Court Building. Turn left at the T junction in front of the Court and the Well is by the roadside just a few yards along to the right.
